When is the Olympics?
The next Olympic Games, starting 24th July 2020, will be held in the Japanese capital city, Tokyo. This will be the 32nd Olympic Games and the second time that Tokyo has been the host city, after they held the world’s largest sporting event back in 1964.
There until the next Olympics.
According to the event organisers, the 2020 Olympics will be ‘the most innovative ever organised, and will rest on three fundamental principles to transform the world: striving for your personal best (achieving your personal best); accepting one another (unity in diversity); and passing on a legacy for the future (connecting to tomorrow)’.
Many of the competition venues will be pre-existing, some of which were used in the 1964 Games such as the Nippon Budokkan venue that will hold the judo event and the Baji Koen Park for the equestrian competition. The venue for the opening and closing ceremony, as well the athletics events, the Tokyo National Stadium, is though being replaced by a brand new arena.
The 1964 Games were the first ever to be held in Asia, and will be the fourth time, when you include the Winter Olympics of 1972 and 1998, that Japan has held Olympic Games in the country.
New sports for Tokyo
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced five new sports to be added to the programme for the 2020 Games. Spectators in Japan and those watching on around the world will now be able to watch baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing over the course of the competition.
The Games will feature a total of 339 events across 33 different sports. Alongside the five new events, fifteen new events are set to be added to the existing sports, including 3-on-3 basketball, freestyle BMX and Madison cycling, a relay race in track cycling.
The Olympic Games is the biggest, most prestigious sporting competition in the world, and with the Tokyo Games set to be bigger than ever before, the exciting countdown to the opening ceremony is very much on.
